The Polo Guy's Blueprint: 5 Core Drills for Offside Forehand Precision
Welcome to the Polo Guy Army! Whether you're prepping for your first chukker or refining your tournament play, consistency is key. The offside forehand is the foundation of your entire game. In this blog, I will break down the exact training drills I use to keep my swing crisp, powerful, and repeatable.
Foundation & The Mechanical Horse (Mech Horse Drills)
Visual Layout
Phase 1: Static Mechanics & Muscle Memory
The Drill: The 50-Swing Grip & Extension Check
Objective: Build wrist strength and ensure a clean swing plane before adding real horse movement.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Sit on your mech horse, with your stirrup length set to your riding height. If you're at home, stand on a sturdy chair.
Grip the mallet with your thumb pointing straight down the flat side of the handle.
Practice 25 slow-motion extensions, focusing on your shoulder rotation and keeping your elbow close to your body.
Execute 25 full-speed swings, concentrating on the distinct wrist "flick" at the lowest point of the arc.
The Polo Guy's Pro-Tip: "Don't muscle the mallet. Let the weight of the head do the work. If your forearm burns after 10 swings, your grip is too tight."

Ball Control & Turf Drills (Short-Game Precision)
Phase 2: Turf Precision & Ball Tracking
The Drill: The Three-Cone Slalom
Objective: Develop soft hands, precise ball tracking, and timing your late swing variations.
Setup:
Place three cones in a straight line, each exactly 3 yards apart.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Approach the first cone at a slow walk or jog (or on foot for a warm-up).
Tap the ball lightly to guide it smoothly between Cone 1 and Cone 2.
Use a soft, abbreviated wrist flick to cut the ball around Cone 2.
Line up your final shot and execute a clean offside forehand drive straight past Cone 3.
The Polo Guy's Pro-Tip: "Look at the ball, but focus on the spot right behind it. If you look up early to see where the ball is going, you will top it every single time."

Mounted Execution (Real-Speed Arena Drills)
Phase 3: Canter Timing & Leg Stability
The Drill: The Half-Chukker Line Drive
Objective: Maintain a perfectly steady leg position and secure seat while striking at pace.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Start your horse at a collected canter down the long boards of the arena or field.
Drop a ball and let it roll slightly ahead of your stirrup.
Rise smoothly out of your saddle, shifting your weight entirely into your heels and thighs to create a steady platform.
Drop your shoulder, swing cleanly along the line of the boards, and follow through completely until your mallet points at your target.
The Polo Guy's Pro-Tip: "Your stability comes from your legs, not the reins. If you pull back on your horse's mouth mid-swing, you destroy your balance and ruin your shot."
