Global Expert Polo Coaching : Why Teaching Has Become My Greatest Win

If someone had told me ten years ago that I would experience immense satisfaction watching one of my students perform a flawless neck shot, I would have dismissed them with a smile. However, there's something uniquely gratifying about witnessing the game come together for someone else, particularly if you're the one who helped them achieve it.
Polo is a steep learning curve. It’s chaotic, it’s fast, and it requires a level of coordination that feels impossible when you’re first starting out. But with expertise and tailored sessions, the transformation is incredible. I’ve stopped using a one-size-fits-all approach. Every player is different - different body types, different levels of horse confidence, different mental blocks. When I can sit down with a student, analyze exactly why they are missing that off-side shot or getting stuck in the traffic, and then build a session specifically to fix it… that’s where the magic happens. Seeing the lightbulb go on when they finally connect the dots is a sense of satisfaction I can’t replicate anywhere else.
The Secret Weapon: The Mechanical Horse
One of the tools that has revolutionised my coaching is the mechanical horse. I know, I know, you might think it can never be as good as being on a horse. But let me tell you, it is a game-changer.
When a player is on a mechanical horse, we strip away the variables. We take the "pony management" out of the equation just long enough to focus purely on the biomechanics of the swing. We can repeat the same shot 50 times in ten minutes. It allows players to build muscle memory without worrying about their horse drifting, spooking, or getting tired.
But more importantly, it teaches control. Once a player masters the mechanics on the machine, we turn the machine on. The movement mimics the stride of a real pony. Suddenly, they aren’t just learning to swing a stick; they are learning to balance their body, control their core, and time the swing with the stride. It bridges the gap between theory and reality faster than months of just playing in chukkas.
Global Expert Polo Coaching:
Here is the thing that has genuinely surprised me, though: the virtual lessons.
I never imagined I could teach polo through a screen. Polo is so tactile—it’s about the feel of the reins, the pressure of your seat bones, the weight of the mallet. But necessity breeds innovation, and after the world shifted a few years ago, I decided to give it a serious go. Now, it’s one of my favorite parts of the set-up. The way it works is brilliant. A player—wherever they are in the world —sends me videos of what they want to work on. Maybe it’s a match replay where they keep hooking the opponent’s mallet instead of the ball. Maybe it’s a video of them hitting on the mechanical horse where their elbow is bending.
I review the footage, I break it down frame by frame, and then we jump on a Zoom or WhatsApp call. I can draw on the screen, show them side-by-side comparisons with pros, and walk them through a tailored session plan.
Understanding the global polo community has been an amazing experience. I've been fortunate to coach players in countries I haven't even traveled to. What stands out to me is how alike our challenges are. Whether you're playing on a lush green field in England or a dusty cancha in Argentina, the struggles are universal. "Stiff hips" are experienced in Florida just as they are in France. The fear of the 'lean out' for a near-side shot at speed is identical for both a beginner in Texas and a patron in Dubai.
Knowing that we are all fighting the same battles, connected by the same desire to improve, makes the world feel a lot smaller—and a lot friendlier.
Final Thoughts
I still love winning. I still love the adrenaline of a close match. But now what I also want is to get my Polo Guy Army winning! Whether it’s a junior player finally learning to control their pony’s speed with their seat, or a seasoned amateur perfecting their penalty swing on the mechanical horse, watching The Polo Guy Army grow through tailored global expert polo coaching is my new addiction.
If you’re struggling with a specific part of your game, send me a video. Chances are, I’ve seen the exact same issue in five different countries this week. Let’s fix it together.
See you on the field—or on the screen. Keep poloing on!
